Marlenis Hidalgo

Marlenis Hidalgo

Now living and working in Uruguay, Marlenis is “totally, totally naïf,” as she told me during my first visit with her more than two decades ago. Her focus is on the joyful side of life, with her cheerful paintings reflecting an attitude that many in the Caribbean maintain. In viewing Marlenis’ colorful works, you are immediately transported back to families, towns and times where storytelling remains paramount. This is the life that Merlinis portrays in her paintings.

Miguel Arzuaga

Miguel Arzuaga

Some people are fortunate enough to find their calling early in life. Such was the case for Miguel Arzuaga, a promising Cuban artist who made his first drawing when he was just 4 years old. After making the drawing, Miguel would tell everyone he was going to become an artist when he grew up. And so he did, and a very good one. Miguel finds in musicians the flow of life that he captures and encapsulates with a certain rhythmic style that is all his own.

Milene Busutil

Milene Busutil

Milene has that rare combination of talent fused with a philosopher's insight. What sets her apart, however, is the insight and the meaning she gives her works. Milene's art is imbued with ideas, which, coupled with the pieces of scrap wood scavenged from the tumbling-down buildings, leads to a powerful expression of those ideas. For Milene, to be a human is to be an artist.

Santiago Lambert

Santiago Lambert

The vibrant colors of coastal life in Cuba come alive in the works of Santiago Lambert. He is a classically trained painter who later in life switched to a derivative style we can call "akimbo." Legs and arms go off in different directions, while the fisherman’s or lover’s gaze remains fixed on something beyond the viewers’ sight. Lambert’s works are a mixture of allegory and social commentary, with his portraits and caricatures leaving viewers with a sense of the mystery and fun of life.
